Daily Morning Routine Checklist- Positive Start to Your Day

Everyone has a morning routine of some sort. Some morning routines can set your day up to be positive and productive while others can set you up for one disaster after another. How does your morning routine stack up?

The time between when your alarm goes off and when you head out the door or get started working is some of the most valuable time in your day. If you hit the snooze and go back to bed you could end up rushing and stressed.

If you have the right habits first thing in the morning you can end up with a positive start to your day. Here are the important elements on my daily morning routing checklist to make sure that I start my day off on the right foot and be more productive.

First- Put your feet on the floor and GO!

One of the worst things you can do in the morning before work is hit snooze and go back to bed. Failing to get out of bed when you plan to can tank your motivation for the entire day.

You are already partly awake, you had a reason to set your alarm at that time in the first place, so sit up, get out of bed, and get going!

My daughter has a difficult time getting out of the bed in the morning. Trying to get her up is one of the hardest parts of my day so I am trying to teach her to get herself up and moving. Her alarm is set to the song “”Party Starter”” by Will Smith. It helps get her excited and moving instead of hiding in bed all day.

If that doesn’t work I’m going to buy her this robotic alarm clock that runs and hides when it goes off. It could end up under your bed or in your closet- it keeps going off until you get up and find it. Genius idea! Click the picture for more info & to buy!


Once you are out of bed, don’t get back in it! If I get up and go to the bathroom and sit back down, before I know it I’m passed out on the pillow again.

As soon as I get up I do the essentials- start my husband’s coffee, put in my contacts, brush my teeth, and get into work workout clothes (or at least put on shorts because I just sleep in a t shirt). Then I’m mostly awake and ready to start the rest of my routine.

The rest of the items on my list can be done in any order. Some days I eat breakfast first, some days I workout first, and sometimes I get my head in a positive space.

Superfood Shake!

After sleeping for 7-8 hours your body needs energy to help wake up and work efficiently. That’s why breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You’ve exhausted last night’s dinner and need energy!

There are so many breakfast options to choose from, just avoid processed sugars like donuts, sugary cereals, soda, juices with added sugar and jams. They can cause you to crash a short time later and feel even more tired.

I usually have a super food shake packed with proteins, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Or I’ll make scrambled eggs, a banana, and half an English muffin. Oatmeal with berries is another quick, energy filled breakfast.

If you’re short on time you can prepare your breakfast ahead of time with overnight oats, baked scrambled eggs with veggies and meat, homemade breakfast cookies, or homemade energy/protein bars.

Wake Up Your Body

One of the best ways to wake up your body is to do a workout in the morning. It gets your blood pumping and boosts your energy so you are awake and ready to focus. 10-15 minutes is enough to get you going.

Some mornings I walk my dogs around the neighborhood- a brisk 15-minute walk will get your heart rate up. Other days I do 10-15 minutes of Yoga to stretch and energize my body. A Sun Salutation Flow is a great way to wake up!

If you are able to get in a full workout in the morning you will be ahead of the game! My favorite workouts include Country Heat, T20, 21 Day Fix, and PIYO. They range in length from 20-40 minutes and are total body workouts that can be done at home. Check out my Beachbody On Demand Review.

Why I NEED a positive mindset!

The last part of my daily morning checklist is making sure that I get in the right head space to start my day on a positive note. Before I head off to work, out to run errands, or start on whatever I need to get done for the day I take 15-20 minutes to put positive thoughts into my head.

I ALWAYS make sure I get my positive mindset (and sense of calm that comes with it) before my teenagers wake up. To me, this is one of the most essential aspects of my routine because once my kids are up… well, the meme on the left perfectly describes it!

Some days I meditate and use mantras to help me focus on being efficient, happy and positive. See my post What is Mindfulness for more info on meditation and mantras.

I also regularly read motivational and self-help books to help motivate me. I usually come across one positive thought or quote that I can focus on for the day. My post Top Personal Development Books has my top 5 list of self-help and inspirational books.

Another option is to listen to a podcast while getting ready or even on your drive to work. There are many positive, inspirational and motivational podcasts out there to choose from.

There are lots of apps for podcasts. Two of my favorite are SoundCloud and Castbox. Both are free apps with ads, or you can upgrade for ad free. I also listen to mindfulness and meditation on SoundCloud.

Other ways to start your day off on a positive note, if you are religious, would include prayer and scripture study. You can also find a thought for the day or inspirational quote daily calender.

Your Morning Routine

Now that you know the essentials of my daily morning routine, take some time to develop a routine individualized to your routine. The specific order you get these items done in and how much time your spend is totally up to you.

My routine runs smoothest when I have a plan of attack every day.

When I work full-time this is my routine:

5:00 am- wake up, get dressed, brush teeth, put in contacts

5:15 am- press play on 20-30 min workout video OR walk dogs around neighborhood

5:45 am- cool-down while drinking a super food shake and reading a self-improvement book.

6:00 am- shower & get dressed for work

6:45 am- pack lunches for kids, husband and self

7:00 am- wake-up teenage daughter

7:30 am- leave for work

Sure, it’s a 2.5 hour routine from wake-up to leave for work time, but it helps my day run smoothly. Bonus: no matter what else happens during the day I have eaten a healthy breakfast, completed a workout, and have a positive mindset.

  1. Hey Amber, thanks for the great morning tips! I’m the kind of person who is more or less a disaster when there is no plans made in advance.

    However I do get one thing right that is mentioned here, just getting up and going for it. I like the morning workouts to get my day started, and of course a big breakfast too.

    My advice: Try a cold shower sometime. Its a great alternative to coffee, haha.

    • Cold shower would definitely wake me up! I’m a person who hates to be cold- I ease into a swimming pool. So I’ve never enjoyed cold showers! But when trying to wake up you don’t necessarily have to enjoy it!

    I am very fortunate to be able to wake up with sunlight. I do not need an alarm clock anymore, because I start work at 10. Nonetheless, for many years – before I was lucky enough to begin working at 10 am – I used to wake up to the sound of my alarms at 5 am … and it was tough. It was easiest on Mondays and Tuesdays, but as the week wore on and I got more tired, getting up in the mornings turned into an ordeal.
    Yep, don’t hit the snooze button. What’s the point of sleeping another five minutes? it doesn’t do anything for you. I love the idea of the robotic alarm that runs away from you! That is so funny! I had never heard of it. That would be a great gift (funny, at least)
    It’s great that you have your morning routine worked out, and I do understand about waking up teenagers. I teach teenagers (7th grade 😉 )

    • I have the utmost respect for middle school teachers! I have two teens- a 14 and 13 year old. We barely survived 7th grade with both of them! The transition from elementary school to middle school was rough. Thank you so much for reading my article!

  3. I really like your morning routine. And I agree never go back to bed after your alarm clock has gone off. There are a few times I’ve done that and paid for it with a headache.

    Eating in the morning sets your body up for great functionality. Without the proper fuel to get you going, the whole day turns into one slugfest, which then drains the energy out of what needs to be done. Great article.

    • Thank you so much for reading! I definitely push eating in the morning- it’s the first thing I have my kids do. I have friends who do fasting diets where they only eat during certain hours of the day, usually after 10 am and before 6 pm. I would be so drained by 10 am if I didn’t eat breakfast!

  4. My favorite part about this article is the alarm that runs and hides! That actually made me laugh while I was reading, hilarious! It’s a great concept, but I’ll probably get back in bed once I find it. Someone people just have to force themselves up. Scaring me works, but its normally not hard for me to get out of bed.
    Reading your article reminded of something. I read another article about successful people and one thing they do is write out tasks for the next day. If someone has their tasks written down next to their alarm clock, it might motivate them to get up, what do you think?”

    • I do try to make a plan for the next day before I go to bed at night. Usually I have one main task that I will focus on getting done to move me toward a goal. I usually don’t have it written down by my alarm clock- my list is on my desk in my office. Unless it’s something actually scheduled before my usually morning routine is done, my to do list waits until I’m done with my morning routine. But it is a good suggestion for those who need a reason tog et out of bed.
